New Trends from the Tucson Gem and Mineral Shows

Napa Valley Jewelers

The GIA’s recent Gems & Gemology, Spring 2017 publication reports on the 2017 Tucson gem and mineral shows that each year draws interested buyers from across the globe.  The GIA noted that as with past years that this year’s shows point to some strong trends in the jewelry industry.

One of the trends is the demand for special, one-of-a-kind pieces that are crafted with pearls and colored gemstones.  The GIA also noticed the strong demand for high-end gems and a softening of demand for commercial goods.  In addition the industry is becoming more focused on ethically sourced gemstones and beneficiation.

The article reports that the shows biggest story was the “emergence of Ethiopia as a potentially major source of gem-quality emerald. These new gems resemble other schist-hosted emeralds, especially those from Brazil and Zambia.”  The emeralds are less saturated and included, but nevertheless this source is producing fine gem-grade crystals of exceptional size, color, and clarity.

Another topic of interest was the October 2016 removal of U.S. sanctions on Myanmar that now legalizes the import of Burmese jadeite and rubies.  Geologist Edward Boehm, a colored stone dealer and consultant, said that while the lifting of the ban was welcomed, he thought Myanmar reforms on the gem mining sector “have some ways to go” and new production may take time to reach the marketplace.

Padis Jewelry is glad to hear of the continuing trend toward ethical, sustainable business practices and transparent supply chains as it is very important to our business. Superior craftsmanship is integrated into every Simon G. engagement ring and incorporates high quality alloy material to give the best finish.  Examples include alloying 18k white gold with palladium instead of nickel and alloying his platinum jewelry with Iridium.  Another thing that exemplifies the quality craftsmanship is all Simon G.’s melee diamonds have 4 prongs on each stone to ensure they securely stay in lace.

Simon Ghanimian, the founder of Simon G., tells the story of how he came to America with $200 in his pocket.  He wanted to go to college to become an engineer but quickly realized it was much too expensive so he went to work in the diamond district in New York to save up for school.  There, he started setting diamonds and fell in love with the “process, artistry, and details of jewelry making.” What began as a hobby quickly became a life-long passion.

Rare Cache of Emeralds Up for Auction

Engagement Rings San Francisco

Emeralds are both rarer and more valuable than diamonds.  Amanda Gizzi, a Jewelers of America’s spokesperson, explains, “Sought after for their rich color, regal history and identifiable look, emeralds are one of the most iconic gemstones in the jewelry industry.”

This month, the general public had the rare opportunity to buy some of the most valuable emeralds in the world when they were offered at auction by the Guernsey’s auction house in New York.  The offerings included 20 cut or raw stones as well as 13 magnificent pieces of emerald jewelry from the private collection of Manual Marcial de Gomar, a renowned emerald specialist.

Some of the auction’s emeralds were recovered in the 1980s from the Nuestra Señora de Atocha that sank off the coast of Florida in 1622.   The auction catalog states that the shipwreck is considered by experts to be “the most valuable known shipwreck in history,” and the recovered gems are prized for their deep, clear green color.  The emeralds include nine rough stones totaling over 91 carats.  The “Nine Pillars of Andes” are expected to sell as a group somewhere in the neighborhood of $250,000 to $350,000.  Another stunner from the collection is the 4.39-carat emerald called the “Queen of the Sea.” Experts anticipate it will likely sell for $250,000 to $350,000.

The La Gloria, an 887-carat emerald, which Guernsey reports to be one of the largest museum-quality emeralds in the world, should sell for around $4 to $5 million.  The once in a lifetime auction also includes the Marcial de Gomar Star Emerald that is believed to be the largest star emerald ever found and only one of 11 gem-quality star emeralds in the world.

While our collection of emeralds at Padis Jewelry does not compete with the shipwreck stones from the Nuestra Señora de Atocha, we think you will be thrilled with what you see.  Please visit our website to browse our emerald loose stones and jewelry along with all of our other collections, as well as to set up an appointment to visit to our showrooms.

April’s Birthstone – The Exquisite Diamond

Diamond Store

For all of you lucky enough to be born in April, you are probably aware that your birthstone is a diamond.  The word diamond is derived from the Greek work adamas, which means unbreakable or unalterable, and is considered to be the ultimate symbol of love.

Historians date the love of the diamonds back to 4th century BC Indian Buddhists who used the stones for the eyes in their devotional statues.  India was the earliest major source of diamonds and it was considered to be a well-known precious stone.   By the 3rd century BC, Indian’s had attributed the stone with qualities that included “strength, regularity, brilliance, ability to scratch metals, and good refractive properties.”

In 3rd century BC, a Chinese work explained that “Foreigners wear it [diamond] in the belief that it can ward off evil influences”  Some cultures such as the Hindus connected diamonds to Venus, the planet of love, while others thought they were connected to the planet of Mars and would provide protection and strength in battle.

Diamonds were valued by the Romans for their supernatural powers as related by Pliny, a 1st century AD naturalist, who wrote “a diamond baffles poison, keeps off insanity, and dispels vain fears.”  During the middle ages, the Italians believed a diamond helped to maintain harmony between a husband and wife and called it a “Pietra della Reconciliazione,” (stone of reconciliation).  It was due to this belief and not for their beauty that Italian wedding rings began to be set with diamonds.

To see one of the finest collections of loose certified diamonds in California, we invite you to visit Padis Jewelry showrooms.  At any one time we have 10,000 diamonds in our inventory and all of our stones over 0.40 carats come with an independent grading report to assess its overall quality and authenticity.  Contact us to set up an appointment.
